Hydraulic and Hydrological Modeling

Geo Vision has team of experts to carryout hydraulic analysis and hydrological modeling using HEC-RAS software for the:

  1. Design of dams and Barrages.
  2. Channel Morphological analysis.
  3. Erosion modeling.
  4. Flood Frequency analysis.
  5. Flood plain mapping and forecasting of storm scenario.

Significance of Flood Plain Zoning

Floods have been a recurrent phenomenon in Uttarakhand and posed threats to lives; vandalize properties and devastation to livelihood systems, infrastructure, and public utilities. Therefore, NDMA has framed guidelines for the preparation Flood Plain zoning and demarcation of the area on 5, 25, 50 and 100 year return period. The objective of the guidelines is to regulate the land use such as the construction of settlement in the vulnerable zones.

To minimize vulnerability to floods and consequent loss of lives, Livelihood systems, property and damage to infrastructure and Public utilities (NDMA)

Our Expertise includes:
  1. Flooding occurs when a river’s discharge exceeds its channel’s volume causing the river to overflow onto the area surrounding the channel known as the floodplain. The most common cause of flooding is prolonged rainfall.
  2. The situation becomes worse when floods and landslides occur simultaneously in the hilly area, blocking the course of the river due to a huge supply of sediment load.
  3. Severity and frequency of extreme flood events in the state are increasing due to increasing extreme rainfall events. In the last decades, major flood events have severely influenced and damaged the human lives and their livelihood. Kedarnath flood was one of them, occurred in 2013.
  4. Hydraulic modeling of floods is affected by many sources of uncertainties (input data, model structure and model parameters). An important factor of flood inundation modeling and mapping, especially in complex landscapes, is the accuracy of the digital elevation model (DEM)/ digital terrain model (DTM).
  5. The other important factor in floodplain modeling is the selection of the hydraulic modeling approach (1D, 2D and 1D/2D). One-dimensional (1D) hydrodynamic models are the most widespread approach for the simulation of a flood peak and flood hydrograph because of their simplicity, a minimal amount of input data and low computational power.

Area Drainage Study

Area drainage study services are mainly provided to the clients of Solar and Thermal Power plants. This is required to analyse safe formation level of the plants to the extreme weather events and emergency storm water drainage plan.

Geo Vision provides services as follows:

  • Study of available information in the form of reports, literature, satellite images etc. having a bearing on the area drainage plan. The study shall include review of topographical features of the proposed site for the Power Project and its surrounding area/influence areas and catchments. For satellite data Hydrological modelling integrated with GIS to be used to delineate the flood pockets along nallahs.

  • Collection of all existing data, reports, drawings, literature etc. from various agencies like CWC, Ministry of water resources, Survey of India, IMD and relevant local state authority.

  • Digitizing topographical information for the study area. It includes contours and spot elevations, drainage network, village boundaries, roads and railways.

  • Statistical analysis of rainfall data to obtain 100 years and 50 years return periods rainfall value and estimation of the flood level due to this event. The rainfall information may be analyzed to arrive at design storm scenarios of the various return periods including Standard Project Storm/Probable Maximum Precipitation as may be applicable. Collection of all data including rainfall data etc. from the various authorities is also in the scope of work.

  • Preparation of digital elevation model (DEM) for the study area for delineation of catchment and delineation of drainage network for comparison with drains of toposheet.

  • Physical survey of the relevant Nallas which will have effect towards the flooding and drainage of Plant, Township. The survey of the drains/Nallas should fulfill the requirement of the drainage & flood study.

  • Compilation of land use pattern, soil and other characteristics of the catchments area affecting plant area for determining rainfall excess using satellite imageries or other suitable method.

  • Preparation of inundation maps for different scenarios and decide the safe grade elevation based on the high flood level and other considerations such as free board including optimization for land filling, supported by calculations.

  • To prepare the profile of HFL on the peripheries during worst situation with 100 years and 50 years return period. This is to be done for both present & post construction period and also during flooding of nearby river/nallah, if any.

  • Site visit for reconnaissance survey and collection of data required for successful completion of the study.

  • Geo Vision’s hydrologist visit to the Client site to collect site specific information before start of the work or as it may be required to go to site during the period of study also.

Remote Sensing

Remote Sensing

We Process High-Resolution satellite imagery into data products. The Activities involve removal of distortions in images (geo-rectification, ortho-rectification) and ensuring that the output is of high quality in terms of plan metric accuracy.

The Processing consist of geo-referencing and cutting of specified output formats. A seamless raster data product is produces from multiple image tiles.
